San Lorenzo School District Student Protest
The San Lorenzo Unified School District is definitely breaking our trust…Back in February 2009 the we as the community, students, parents and teachers attended the board meeting and spoke our thoughts and concerns.

They abandoned the six period schedule. However, they recently propose it again and don’t seem to care what the students, teachers and parents say. The six period schedule will take effect the 2009-2010 school year. As a current student of the Leadership class I cannot imagine running on a six period schedule during the school year. 90min is still not enough time to plan school events, organize meetings and carry out our duties, etc. But they don’t understand.
San Lorenzo community we need your help!
AHS & SLzHS: No to Schedule Change!
In the 2010-2011, the school district will change the schedule to either a period or trimester schedule. Prevent this change!

Positions:
|
- Block overall gives the most classes.
- Period schedule is very rushed by limiting daily class time. There isn’t time for a sufficient understanding on a topic.
- Trimester has the possibilities in class gaps causing the chance of forgetting important material.

Description:

The school board has decided to change the scheduling system. The three choices are as follow: 6-period, 7-period, or trimester. They delayed the decision for now. That is temporary. This decision will come again.
6-Period:
6 classes with 55 minutes per class
Total classes 24 (Just 1 more than graduation requirements and A-G courses combined)
Limited time so no time for labs for sciences. Comprehension for some students takes longer.
7-Period
7 classes of 45 minutes each
Total classes 28
Even more limited time than 6-Period
Trimester
5 classes per day of 70 minutes each
7.5 classes per year
30 total classes
Can take APs yearlong
Regular classes can have setting of Fall/Winter, Fall/Spring, Winter/Spring
Problem: There are possible gaps in classes. Memorization is harder
The school board claims that this is for the better of the students as it will help increase the scores. That is not the truth in this case. All the problems in the choices damages learning abilities. Even though the “total time” in the entire year is more than the block, it is chopped up too finely too learn sufficiently. Trimesters is the closest to block, but there are possibilities of learning gaps. They would expect everyone, underachievers to overachievers, to learn at the same pace. |
San Lorenzo School District Student Protest
Hello KPIX CBS 5, my name is Timmy Huynh and I am a student at San Lorenzo High school. As a representative of the student body at San Lorenzo High school it is my duty to best represent the student body’s interests. We have a story that we believe will interest the public and we ask you to take our story into consideration.
What?
The students of San Lorenzo High and Arroyo High school will protest against the district sudden and significant decisions to switch from a four block schedule to a six period schedule without proper consent and support of teachers. This program change will not only cut many teachers it will also cut many college ready programs. Current teachers are furious however they cannot bring this up to the students because this will disrupt the students learning. This unfavorable decision of changing the school’s program will hurt the students education for the 2009-2010 school year.
When?
Wednesday June 10th, 2009 1pm
Where?
Start: (West Gym)
San Lorenzo High School
50 E. Lewelling Blvd.,
San Lorenzo, CA 94580
End: San Lorenzo District Office
15510 Usher St., San Lorenzo, CA 94580
Why?
The students at San Lorenzo feel that the San Lorenzo School District are responding to significant programs changes for the 2009-2010 school year. We feel that the district’s decision to change all the high school’s within the district from currently a four block schedule to a 6 period schedule without proper communication with teachers, parents and students will hurt the student’s learning next year. The school board district views this as the best response to the current financial crisis. The district will cut programs district wide such as ROP which keeps students competitive with real-life work and secure post-secondary plans, College ready programs such as foreign language and rich elective courses. Instead the district will add more Math and English. We believe students should have the equal opportunity to be college- eligible, but more over college-ready. We support the thorough exploration of alternative options to making programs cuts that stay as far away from us students as possible. However this is not the case.
